Writing Studio
The Writing Studio is a free service for current UF students. Here, students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a tutor. Because our aim is to help students become more effective writers, we do not purely proofread or edit student work. We can, however, assist students to become better proofreaders and editors of their own work. We offer students individual, half-hour sessions with one of our experienced grad student writing tutors.
How can we help you improve your writing?
We provide individual assistance that aims to help you not only improve a specific paper, but also to become a better writer. Writers of all levels can visit us at any stage of the writing process.
Tutors can help you:
- brainstorm and generate drafts
- organize and focus ideas
- improve revision, editing, and proofreading skills
- learn to consider and accommodate audience
Projects that you can receive feedback on at the Writing Studio include but are not limited to:
- ENC 1101 and 1102 essays
- research papers
- application essays
- thesis and dissertation drafts
- lab reports

ESL Assistance
If you are an English as a Second Language (ESL) student, you may visit the Writing Studio to improve your writing skills. By working one-on-one with a writing tutor, you can receive assistance brainstorming, drafting, and revising your writing. In addition to answering questions about basic form and usage when writing in English, tutors can also provide support for larger writing projects such as thesis and dissertation chapters. For larger projects, plan on bringing short excerpts (2-5 pages) to the Studio regularly.
Because good writing requires practice, the Studio will also work with you to develop your writing skills even when no writing assignment is due. To participate, you would first meet with a tutor to determine areas you wish to improve, and then attend the Studio once a week to meet with a tutor and go over short writing projects that we can help you develop.
