Grading with Rubrics

Using Rubrics to Teach Writing Outcomes

Rubrics allow students to see the emphasis you put on specific expectations in their written work and allow them to understand how a grade is assigned.

  • Use general writing or style rubrics to establish broad levels of expectation
  • Use genre-specific rubrics to establish writing outcomes
  • Grading with rubrics makes the grading of writing seem less arbitrary
  • The use of a rubric puts more of the responsibility for the grade on the student
  • Types of Rubrics
  • General and applicable to all types of papers—example
  • Specific and keyed to a particular assignment
  • Prioritized checklist
