About
The “Health Disparities and Health Charities” program immerses students in the history and culture of public health in the UK. Open to any major, the program helps students understand the present state of public health and medicine within the larger British context of monarchy, the slave trade, industrialization, and imperialism. Students will explore the world’s largest repository of medical archives at the Wellcome Collection in London and visit health nonprofits in Edinburgh to learn about how the third sector is researching and implementing solutions to deep-rooted health disparities in the UK.
The program encourages students to draw connections between past and present and between issues of health access and equity in the UK and in their home countries. Throughout this 6,000-word-conferring program, students will have direct experience with intercultural communication and will strengthen their global awareness of public health. They will return to their home countries with research and communication skills that would empower them to advocate for health equity in their own communities.
Location
The United Kingdom is currently a well-funded hub of medical research and nonprofit institutions, possesses the largest medical archives in the world, and has a rich history of disease and medical discovery that has influenced the entire globe. Students will have the unique opportunity to access historical artifacts and connect them to current day practices in a way that is impossible within the United States given its comparatively short, documented history. London and Edinburgh, specifically, offer an exhilarating array of experiential learning opportunities for students studying the history of public health and medical science.
Excursions
Students will have the opportunity to visit the National Gallery, Surgeon’s Hall Museum, the Royal Mile, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Stirling Castle, and do walking tours in each city. Students will also have free evenings and a few full free days to explore on their own.
Housing
London: Students will stay in twin/triple hotel rooms with an ensuite bathroom.
Edinburgh: Students will stay with a host family in twin rooms with shared bathroom facilities.
