Special Topics in Rhetoric and Writing is designed to advance students’ ability to write in specific genres and develop their understanding of special topics related to the field. Examples of genres include ethnography, non-fiction narrative, and digital media. Topics will range from discipline-oriented issues such as legal reasoning or the language of medicine to event-specific issues such as the rhetoric of the Gulf oil spill or the current Syrian conflict. Specific sections will be tailored to the expertise of the faculty members teaching the course.
Outcomes
By the end of ENC 4930, students will be able to
- Analyze influential research, theories, or philosophies related to the special topic.
- Write with facility in the genre specified by the special topic.
- Make well-reasoned critiques of examples of the genre specified by the special topic.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the critical linguistic and rhetorical components of the event in focus or special topic.
