COURSE INFORMATION

IDS 4956: Global Challenges & Design Thinking in Health (3 credits)
ENC 4930: Grecian Medical Narratives in Global Health Systems (3 credits)

Program

This program examines healthcare and non-profit healthcare agencies in Greece. Students will engage with the people who call Greece home via interviews, design challenges, and multimodal projects. Students will receive guest lectures from Greece’s leading experts in medicine and public health and shadow at local nonprofits. The Greek national health care system and economy provide important points of comparison for student’s familiar with the U.S. and will help students gain a richer understanding of the global diversity in health care systems and health care experiences. Experiential, international learning is important for all students with an interest in health and design, but especially for those who hope to pursue medical and medically related professions.

Location

Thessaloniki, Greece is the second largest city in Greece. It is ancient city and is home to over 1 million people. Located along the coast of the majestic Mediterranean Sea, Thessaloniki has a rich history and is a beautiful cosmopolitan city. Here students will be immersed in a culture that is filled with plenty of delicious places to eat, abundant shopping, and exciting places to go.

Excursions

Program excursions will include a walking food tour of Thessaloniki; a guided tour of the White Tower; a trip to Meteora; a hike of Mount Olympus; and a weekend in Athens with an excursion to the island of Hydra.

Housing

Student housing in Thessaloniki will be in shared centrally located apartments that have Wi-Fi, linen changes, and cleaning service.

— Open to all majors
— Minimum 3.0 GPA
— Must be in good standing


PRICING


Undergraduate Program Fee: $7,398
Graduate Program Fee: $7,894

A $395 nonrefundable deposit toward the total cost of the program is due at the time of application. The remaining fees are due no later than 45 days prior to departure. If you receive financial aid, you can defer payment until it disburses. Deferment decisions will be based on the amount of aid to be received.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

Tuition for 6 credits, housing, welcome and farewell dinners, in-country transportation, excursions, international health insurance, and emergency medical assistance.

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED

Round-trip airfare, meals, additional personal travel, and personal expenses


FINANCIAL AID and SCHOLARSHIPS


Most financial aid that you would receive on campus can be applied toward the cost of this program. However, all financial aid eligibility is determined by Student Financial Aid & Scholarships.

UFIC offers many study abroad scholarships, with various eligibility criteria. The Summer 2024 scholarship deadline is February 8, 2024. Apply on our website!
